Comprised of Derick Graber on Drums, John Gregory and Blaine Dillinger from And 5 Makes 20 (Findlay/Columbus, OH) on bass and electric guitar/keys/trombone, respectively; the Mixtape Bandits were formed out of necessity to bring Jakob Freely's music to bigger venues. "It was time to take a step past the acoustic trio thing..." says Dave. "We're still an acoustic group at heart...but now we can rock a little bit too..."
After locking in the group, the boys dove into various basements to re-work some of the old Freely tunes, staying true to that pop melody Freely is known for, but surrounding it with a more musical atmosphere. "One thing our music always lacked," Bobby adds "were layers." "You can only do so much with two acoustic guitars and a couple djembe drums...we felt it was time to grow a little."
This Fall the boys plan to re-enter the studio as Jakob Freely & the Mixtape Bandits, for a third time to record another full-length follow up to the Spring's "Elliot EP." Plans are in place for a 10 song album with 7 brand new tunes and 3 re-worked older Freely songs.
